Ice Climbing in the Rauris Valley

Winter brings visitors who are looking for a vertical challenge to the Rauris valley in the Austrian province of Salzburg.

The Eisarena Kolm Saigurn is the largest ice-climbing training centre in the country and offers challenging routes on 14 different frozen waterfalls.

One great advantage of this area is that around half of the waterfalls can be reached from the Naturfreundehaus in less than 15 minutes on foot.

Those who have never tried the sport can book a ‘taster course’ at the Naturfreundehaus. There at 1600m in altitude, they can take their first vertical steps on the twelve-metre-high “Sonnblickbasis” ice tower.

More experienced ice climbers can also find other challenges in nearby destinations, such as the Hüttwinkltal. A mountain guide service can also be booked for expert leadership and advice.
