Salzburg’s Surprising Waters

Mountain lakes and waterfalls in the Salzburger Land offer all kinds of surprises and some of them are especially impressive.

The Tappenkarsee near Kleinarl (pictured above) is the largest mountain lake in the Eastern Alps.

The idyllic Prebersee is located in the Lungau region. It is best known as the annual venue of the “Preberschießen” competition – an historic and slightly odd water target shooting event where the shots have to bounce off the surface of the lake to count. This year it takes place on 24 and 25 August.

The Krimml waterfalls are a popular tourist attraction. The Krimmler Ache plunges over 380 metres and three stages into the depths, forming the highest waterfall in Central Europe. The waterfall’s misty spray offers relief from asthma, allergies and respiratory diseases.

The Schödersee is a wonderful lake in the Grossarl valley. It is only visible at the time of snow melting and after heavy rain. In summer it dries up.

The way to the lake is scenically as well as acoustically interesting: ínitially a stream accompanies hikers, but suddenly it becomes quiet. The noise of the water has ceased as the stream flows underground on a part of the path. But soon the view of the beautiful Schödersee opens up, during the periods it is there.

The hike from Talwirt near Hüttschlag to Schödersee takes about two hours. Every Tuesday from mid-July to mid-September there is a guided excursion with the “Hohe Tauern National Park” ranger to the Schödertal.
