Vienna residents know that the spring has arrived when people start flocking to the famous Prater Park, drawn by the greenery and the blossoms on the chestnut trees.

Springtime in Vienna has been immortalised several times in songs and has also been the subject painted by famous artists who worked in the city. As a classic song from the 1950s has it: “In the Prater, the trees are in bloom again”.

The blossom display is particularly beautiful along the four-and-a-half-kilometre-long Prater-Hauptallee, which is lined with around 2500 chestnut trees.

Spring impressions from earlier decades were captured, for example, by the Viennese painter Tina Blau (1845-1916). “Spring in the Prater” is the title of one of her major works, which can be admired in the Belvedere in Vienna.
