Railway romantics are always in for a summer treat in the Ziller valley. The steam train operated by the Zillertalbahn starts its new season at the beginning of May.

The steam trains of the Zillertal Railway are almost 120 years old and still transport guests from Jenbach to Mayrhofen and back every day in summer. The train offers a wonderful view of the impressive landscape in the valley, including the numerous surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks, as well as a touch of nostalgia.

The train ride with the steam train of the Zillertal Railway is an unforgettable experience for young and old alike, regardless of whether you enjoy the full route from Jenbach to Mayrhofen or board the train at one of the stations in the Zillertal towns. Passengers can enjoy the culinary delights in the nostalgic dining car or enjoy the panorama in the open-air carriage.

The ‘old lady’ of the Zillertal Railway is operated with coal, which means sweaty manual labour. From May to October, the train drivers are on site every day at 06.00 in the morning to preheat the steam locomotive, which is then brought from the boiler house to the station track at 10.00.

Railway fans are often waiting there to catch their first glimpse of the nostalgic locomotive. The train then travels up the valley to Mayrhofen, a rail journey that also has something of a trip back in time.
