Cross-country Skiing in the Ausseerland

The Ausseerland in the Salzkammergut is a great destination for cross-country skiers.

The region offers 200 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails at different altitudes, prepared for both classic and skating techniques.

Those starting from Bad Aussee, for example, can choose a five-kilometre-long sunny cross-country trail. Or visitors can take the four-kilometre Blaa-Alm-Rettenbach cross-country ski run from Altaussee.

Thirteen trails have their starting point in Bad Mitterndorf. The wide, fog-free basin offers ideal terrain for both beginners and advanced skiers. The two high-altitude trails on the Tauplitzalm, where snow is guaranteed are perfect for experienced skiers. The ten and twelve-kilometre-long trails also offer impressive views of the Grimming and Dachstein peaks.

The cross-country ticket for the entire region costs 7 Euros per day. It is available at the tourist offices, from many accommodation providers and from nine ticket machines. The tickets for three or seven days are better value per day.

Those who are fit enough can register for the “Steiralauf”, one of the most traditional cross-country skiing events in Austria. The Ausseerland-Salzkammergut has been the venue of this mass cross-country ski event for 42 years, with several hundred amateur and professional cross-country skiers taking part. The distances to be covered range from ten to fifty kilometres. It will take place on 29 and 30 January 2021.
