The Sound of Stone

What does nature sound like?

The “Klangraum.Stein” (‘Soundspace.Rock’) theme trail in the Großes Walsertal Biosphere Reserve in Vorarlberg attempts to answer this question.

The trail begins at the top station of the Sonntag-Stein cable car. Installations created by artists such as John Cage along the route invite visitors to explore and listen to the soundscape. There are stations where you can use listening funnels, for example, or where you can create your own sounds.

For most hikers, the Echowand is the highlight. If you shout words at the steep rock face, you can hear an echo repeating softly.

Along the way there is also an adventure playground and a barbecue area with a clay oven.

The trail is around four kilometres in length and has an altitude difference of around 200m.

The Sonntag-Stein cable car runs until 27 October.
